Peel and cube the potatoes. In a separate pot, boil the peeled and cubed potatoes until they are tender (about 10-12min). Drain the potatoes.
Add the butter to the potatoes. Mash them together. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg to taste.
Add the milk to the mashed potatoes. Mash them together until smooth and creamy.
Meanwhile, in a large pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until they turn translucent and fragrant.
Add the ground beef to the pan and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spatula or wooden spoon to ensure it cooks evenly.
Stir in the salt, and pepper. Mix well to incorporate the flavors. Allow the mixture to simmer for a few minutes.
Remove from the heat and add parsley.
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
In one big baking dish or individual ones, spread half of the mashed potatoes evenly at the bottom layer.
Next, spread the cooked ground beef mixture over the mashed potatoes, creating a middle layer.
Finally, layer the remaining mashed potatoes on top, smoothing it out with a spatula.
Sprinkle grated Gruyere or Parmesan cheese on top for an extra touch of richness and flavor.
Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 30 minutes, or until the top is golden and the dish is heated through.
Once done, remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
